NYMR 175th Anniversary

The North yorkshire Moors Railway recently Celebrated the 175th anniversary of the Whitby and Pickering Railway.

So obviously I went to visit; got some decent videos in, but as of yet only the one about the Rocket and Planet replicas is on youtube.

For those few who visit for posts regarding technology, gaming or science, I formally apologise.

With the NYMR about to be celebrating the 175th anniversary of the Whitby-Pickering route and the return of some of the locomotives from my youth; I feel compelled to advertise the railway.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway runs heritage steam and diesel hauled trains between the market town of Pickering and the seaside town of Whitby, famous for its Abbey.

If starting your journey at Pickering, you will immediately notice the overall station roof, which has recently been re-instated after being removed by British Railways in the 1950's. Pickering also has the Carriage and Wagon works, where coaches and wagons are restored and repainted.

The next station is Levisham, noted for being almost two miles away from the village it takes it's name from. Levisham station house is home to the railways artist-in-residence, Chris Ware, and he can often be found in his workshop, where you can buy paintings, prints, or just have a chat.

Newton-Dale Halt is a request stop, you must inform the Guard or Ticket Inspector if you wish to get off here; although there are no amenities here, save a shelter, Newton-Dale is in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park and has a signposted path back to Levisham station for those who enjoy a stroll.

Next up is Goathland, made famous as 'Aidensfield' in ITVs Heartbeat and as 'Hogsmeade' station in the first Harry Potter film. Goathland has an unusual setting for a tea room, as it is in the old goods shed, complete with wagons and crane. Goathland is also one end of The Rail Trail; a path that follows the route of the original Whitby and Pickering Railway between Goathland and Grosmont.
It is advised to walk from here and catch the train back from Grosmont; better you coast down the hills and the train puff up than the other way 'round!

Grosmont is the operational heart of the railway; from the station it is a short walk through the original 1830's tunnel to the engine sheds and workshops, where you can see locomotives being restored and repaired. Grosmont is also the mainline connection for the NYMR, as it links onto the Whitby-Middlesbrough line. This station is the northern terminus for some trains, but on most days, three trains per day run through to Whitby.

Whitby is the northern terminus for certain trains, however, it only has one running line; so the NYMR must run trains in co-operation with the mainline services they share the route with. Due to the single platform, the train must also reverse to a loop just outside the station for the locomotive to run around, passengers must leave the train while this occurs, even if they intend to return south on the same train.

Well that's it for a boring blog post about railways; perhaps the next one will be about modern technology?

Oh but I am!

FIRSTLY! The colour sceme and layout of the blog has been updated; much better than the black a green I had before, no? And before anyone says, PURPLE, YIS.

What new stuff has happened over the past months, oh yes! I have a new graphics card (nVidia GTX460 SE) and power supply (500w).

I Pre-Ordered Portal 2, so anyone who doesn't have the original, catch me on Steam (majormagna) and if I like you, you might get it!

Oh yes, the 'Hatless Update' has broken TF2; Quelle surprise! Oh well; it'll get fixed eventually. My friend Aaron has also gifted me a copy of Super Meat Boy, fun, but aggrivating.

With regards to EVE Online, I recently got myself one of them newfangled battleships all the kids are raving about. And jumped into some level 3 missions.

Not much else has happened to be honest; I lead a fairly boring life.

Oh and in case a certain person reads this; no, never viable, never, not in ANY reality.

That's right! I've joined a podcast; they're only on episode 5; so it's still a bit.... bumpy, at least for now. A bit of background; 'Enigmatic Beavers' is a gaming and technology podcast, we also talk about random crap including cats, the meaning of life etc.

So come on people! Get this poor sonofabitch a decent graphics card and PSU! a GT220 with a 250w power supply is nigh-worthless for playing games such as EVE Online and Source games!

Driving Test

I have passed my driving test! Sadly there's so much ice now that I can't drive, typical.

Oh well, it's nearly Christmas! YAAAY! No idea what I'm getting, if anything. Cash for a new Graphics Card and Power Supply for my PC would be nice; £183 for a "768MB nVidia GTX460" and a 500 Watt Power Supply ain't bad.

I've also been getting back into Stronghold. Played the original first because I'd have been completely lost in Stronghold 2 after all these years. At least in the first one you don't have to deal with 'gong' (aka, excrement), rats, crime, and keeping people happy is much easier.

Will post more on the differences and quality of the games soon; but I'm tired, so Imma go to bed.

Well then.

There is currently an altercation between some community forum moderators and other members; I will not use their real names, for privacy.

One of my friends, "Eric" had posted an image twice, in two seperate threads, one being his own workbench thread, the other being an 'art' thread. Within 15 minutes a certain admin, "Collin", had deleted both posts, replying in the art thread: (I shall paraphrase for privacy)

"If that photo's posted on this forum once more, you'll get an official warning. You're starting to annoy me now Eric. >=( "

Now, alright, if Eric had posted the image, say, 20 times, I'd agree at deleting most of them, but even then, not all. His workbench thread should have been left as it was.

Collin has been giving grief to a number of community members, including myself, though not to the same extent as Eric. Collin is a moderator on a number of forums, even though he is newer to them than the majority of people he's been giving grief to. This had led to him thinking he is better than anyone else, and because of this, it has led him to become a grade-A dick.

Collin has been giving Eric negative vibes for a long time, and whatever Eric does, Collin has something negative to say about it; even with things that have, maybe not absolute proof, but are widely concived to be correct.

This is as far as the story has progressed so far; updates will become avaliable as it unfolds.

R-R-RRRAAAAAAAGE! I can't stand this stigma of the "Shut in, world hating gamer". They mention the gaming-depression link, sure, they don't mention it's also linked with social websites OR that no-one knows WHICH comes first, the depression or the 'addiction'.

The major Europe-based TheSixthAxis has also written an open letter to ITV.

tl;dr:
3 people, only 1 knows what he's talking about (Tim Ingham). Julie Peasgood is a 'sexspert' who constantly uses innuendo on the show. Kelvin MacKenzie is a highly controversial journalist who ran the "Gotcha!" headline when the British navy (illegally) sank the Belgrano in the Falklands conflict.
'Debate' descended to Tim Ingham being polite, Julie merely shouting her purely failure of a consiousness and Titchmarsh basically going "LOL U SO FUNNY, STFU INGHAM. NO-ONE CARES THAT MARIO IS NICE, YOU PLAY MW2"

So, thoughts?

I've found a lot of my old railway books, which are primarily based around Doncaster; for obvious reasons. I've also posted a new audio sample on my YouTube account!

Well, over the past week I've been feeling crap, sore throat and a bad back, now it's got worse. I can barely speak and it hurts to move at all.

Also recently, quite a lot of stuff of mine has been hacked; but hopefully I can find out who did it and take them to court.

Well, it's now 17 minutes into thursday as I type this...

I started year 13 at 6th form on monday and I can still do history! Yay! Ok, what else... Tom Wright (Who left at the end of year 11 to go to Doncaster college) is back, although he's taking AS levels; so he's a year behind.

I haven't been playing EVE so much recently, but I've made an 'All round Science-Fiction Forum' called The Docking Port (Or TDP for short).

Okidoke... anything else happen... not really, went to Alistairs today after college, looked at Unreal Tournament III, looks kinda cool; I might consider getting it (If not purely for the pseudo-War of the Worlds Tripods)

I'm still trying to sort out a 'Permanent Way' forum members meet before 2010; but it's proving quite difficult!

Well there isn't much news from the front, this may end up becoming an EVE Online Blog soon... (If anyone has it, my name's Tai Juin, look me up!)

Tritanium prices have dropped from 4isk/unit to around 2.6,not that good; however Mexallon has jumped up again, so I'm no longer mining Veldspar. I still haven't payed for my Hulk either...

I've decided the best way of making money is no-longer selling minerals on the common market, but to sell to my corporation, at least I still get something out of it.

Well, it's the summer holidays; thank god!

Got a fair bit planned for the next few weeks, including a week-long trip to Scotland, a bit of EVE Online and some other random crud.

I've just got back from Sarah's house, so I'm on EVE, mining ores; the price of Tritanium has gone down even more than last week, and the 'ice-boom' seems to be calming down... good for buyers; bad for miners (of which I am one).
I still have a Hulk to pay for....

Well after my Silver 160GB iPod was smashed by a git at school; it's a very good thing the contest I entered (And got second place in!) was giving away iPods...

Swaledale

Well from last monday to friday I was on a residential trip with my Biology class to Grinton Lodge in Swaledale, well Geography went too but I don't take that.

We went up in the minibus, stopped off for dinner at Richmond... the fish wasn't that good, but the chips were good. Then we set off again towards Grinton, stopping off once more at 'Eddys Bridge' for prelimenary work.
From here we set off again for a look at the local history, mainly comprised of the lead mining industry.

Anyway, the majority of the trip was spent doing research and investigations on the River Swale. On the day before we left we did our main investigation, involving a 20 metre transect across the river and taking note of the water depth, pH, oxygen content (125%? How? Supersturation means nothing to me.)

Well, it was fun, I found 2 fossils and 3 peies of evidence for narrow gauge railways and on the last night we went to the pub. I lost all my money at poker... got sunburnt and bitten to death by midges...

New Blog, and an Introduction

Well here we are, my first Blog post; you'd expect me to have something interesting to say, but no. I'm Dan, as you may have guessed, I'm 17 years old and about to start my second year of A levels at Campsmount Technology College. Speaking of which, my mother is an art teacher and my father a retired physics/biology teacher; although not at any school I've been to (Thank God).

My A level courses are:
Biology,
General Studies,
Film Studies,
ICT.
I did do History and Physics, but I was kicked out of one and dropped the other.

I have an interest in many different things; incuding railways, PC gaming and Star Trek. Of course there is more, but that will come in due course... I like many different PC games, I'm not so fond of console games though. Some personal favourites include Halo, Team Fortress 2, Battlefield Heroes and Left 4 Dead. I have a deep love of nature and the countryside, so I often go for long walks by myself in the middle of no-where. Although soon I'll be able to drive (I hope).

I'm currently in a relationship with a girl who lives about a hundred miles away from me. So not as bad as for some people... At the moment I live in a small village called Little Smeaton, behind my house is one of the old stations of the former Hull & Barnsley Railway, hence my interest in railways.

I'll add more posts when or if I think of anything.
